13th of Rajab - Birth of Imam Ali (AS)
By Benjamin Kwiecien @ 1:12 AM :: 328 Views :: Religious Occasions

On this occasion we celebrate the birth of Imam Ali (AS), Islam's first Imam after the Prophet Muhammad (SASW).

Imam Ali (AS) carries the distinction of being born inside the Holy Kabaa after his mother, Fatima bint Asad, prayed to God to ease the birth of her child.  Upon her supplication, a crack formed in the wall of the Kabaa as witnessed by Abbass bin Abdul-Mottaleb and Yazeed bin Taaf, where she entered and stayed after giving birth to the child whom she was told to call Ali.

Since the birth of Imam Ali (AS), the Holy Prophet (SASW) took personal care of the Imam's education and soon took the boy into his home.  In this way, Imam Ali (AS) was able to closely accompany the Holy Prophet (SASW) during all occasions, including otherwise solitary endeavors such as journeys into the wilderness and to town.

Imam Ali (AS) went on to become the first man to accept the message of Islam brought forth by the Holy Prophet (SASW).   On numerous occasions, Imam Ali (AS) proved his dedication to Islam and its Messenger, and on numerous occasions was pronounced by the Holy Prophet (SASW) to be leader for the Ummah, including at Ghadir Khumm before a gathering of thousands.

Imam Ali (AS) was married to the daughter of the Holy Prophet (SASW), Fatima (AS), who by God's grace bore two sons, the Imams Hassan and Hussayn (AS).
